“DStv Explorer” is often how people refer to the Explora decoder range, and it’s frequently confused with ExtraView — but the two solve the multi-room problem in different ways.

What ExtraView Actually Does

ExtraView links a second standard decoder to your primary decoder so the second TV can watch a different channel from the same subscription, without paying for two full packages. It’s the more affordable route to a second independent viewing point, but the second decoder doesn’t record independently or offer the same on-screen features as an Explora.

What Explora Adds

The Explora range (including Explora Ultra and Explora 2) is a single, more capable decoder with built-in recording, catch-up, and its own multi-room capability that can link additional Explora units or use the DStv app to stream on other devices in the house. It’s a bigger upfront cost but a more flexible long-term setup, particularly for households that record a lot of content.

Which One Fits Your Home

  • Two or three rooms, different channels, budget-conscious: ExtraView linking a standard decoder is usually the right call.
  • Want recording, catch-up, and app streaming across the house: an Explora-based multi-room setup is worth the extra cost.
  • Already own a standard decoder and just need a second TV point: ExtraView is the quicker, cheaper upgrade path.

Setup Matters More Than the Decoder You Choose

Whichever route you pick, the linking and cabling setup is where most DIY attempts go wrong — an incorrectly linked ExtraView decoder often shows the same channel as the primary instead of an independent one, and a poorly configured Explora multi-room setup drops its app connection intermittently.
