ExtraView is DStv’s way of letting a second TV watch a different channel from the same subscription, without paying for a completely separate package. It’s a popular, affordable multi-room option — but the setup needs to be done correctly to actually deliver independent viewing.
How ExtraView Works
A primary decoder connects to the dish as normal. A second, ExtraView-enabled decoder links to the primary decoder and shares its subscription, drawing its own signal from the same dish via a splitter, but tuning independently — meaning the second TV can watch a different channel to the first at the same time.
What the Setup Actually Involves
- Splitting the signal correctly at the dish or a suitable point in the cable run, without degrading signal strength to either decoder
- Linking the two decoders through DStv’s ExtraView activation process, tied to your subscription
- Running a cable to the second TV point, which is often the part that requires drilling or routing through a roof void
- Testing both decoders independently to confirm each can tune to a different channel without interference
What Commonly Goes Wrong With DIY Attempts
The most common issue we see on callouts is a second decoder that mirrors the first instead of tuning independently — usually a sign the linking process wasn’t completed correctly, or the splitter used wasn’t suited to satellite frequencies, which weakens the signal enough to cause intermittent faults on one or both decoders.
Getting It Right the First Time
We test both decoders on different channels simultaneously before considering an ExtraView installation complete — not just confirming a picture on each screen, but confirming true independent tuning and stable signal on both. This is the step that’s most often skipped in a rushed or DIY setup, and it’s usually why a “working” ExtraView setup starts glitching within weeks.
