Choosing a DStv package comes down to three questions: how many people watch, what they watch, and how many rooms need a feed. Get those right and the rest — price, channel count — sorts itself out.

Start With Household Size, Not Channel Count

A single professional living alone rarely needs the same package as a family of five with two teenagers who want separate content in separate rooms. Before comparing channel lists, work out:

  • How many TVs will be connected (single decoder vs. multi-room via ExtraView or Explora)
  • Whether kids’ content, local drama, or international sport matters most
  • Whether anyone in the house watches SuperSport regularly

The Four Main Tiers, Compared

DStv Access is the entry package — a small bundle of local and general entertainment channels, best suited to a single TV in a smaller household that mostly watches local content.

DStv Family sits in the middle and is the most commonly installed package we see across Johannesburg homes. It adds a wider mix of entertainment, kids’ and lifestyle channels without the full sport bundle.

DStv Compact Plus is the package most homes upgrade to specifically for sport — it includes a much broader SuperSport lineup alongside movies and general entertainment, and suits households where weekend sport viewing is non-negotiable.

DStv Premium is the full package: every SuperSport channel, the widest movie and series selection, and first access to new content. It’s the right call for households that genuinely use most of what’s on offer, but it’s overkill if sport isn’t a priority.

Matching Package to Setup

If you’re linking two decoders with ExtraView, remember that both decoders share one subscription and one package — so the package needs to satisfy everyone in the house, not just the main lounge. If different rooms genuinely need different content and package tiers, a second independent decoder and subscription is usually the better (if pricier) route.

A Practical Way to Decide

Rather than picking the package with the most channels, list the five channels your household actually watches weekly. If none of them are SuperSport-specific, Family is almost always enough. If two or more are SuperSport channels, Compact Plus or Premium pays for itself in avoided frustration on a Saturday afternoon.
